Bells and Glockenspiels For Sale on Reverb

There's a wide world of instruments, both big and small, that make up the mallet percussion family—from vibraphones and xylophones to glockenspiels and bells. Here on Reverb, learn about the various mallet percussion instruments and find exactly the right one at a fair and reasonable price point.

What is a glockenspiel? What are bells?

The mallet percussion family has two sides: the wooden instrument side (marimba and xylophones) and the metal instrument side (vibraphone, glockenspiel, and bells). Like the marimba and xylophone, the vibraphone and glockenspiel also feature resonant bars that are struck to make sound, but the bars on these instruments are made of aluminum or brass instead of wood.

Vibraphones and glockenspiels are very similar instruments, especially at first glance, but both instruments have very different ranges. Though both begin at C, the vibraphone's range is very low and it has a mellow sound, while the glockenspiel is higher, sharper, and more piercing.

Bells (or chimes, as they are sometimes called), on the other hand, have a the smallest range of any of the mallet percussion family—both wooden and metal—at just one and a half octaves. Most people associate the sound of chimes or bells with classic church bells.
